Last week, ETN Young Professionals brought together students, recent graduates, and young professionals for an evening dedicated to something many find intimidating: networking.

They brought together two excellent professionals to shed a light on the how;

Inger Tone Ødegård from the Stavanger Chamber of Commerce, who draws from years of networking experience both in Norway and abroad advised attendees to adopt a “YES” mindset, meaning that when we approach social settings with openness and positivity, we create opportunities for meaningful connections.

She also encouraged participants to “take on a role” whenever possible – whether by helping organize an event or supporting others in small ways. Because being in a central position naturally makes you more visible and approachable.

Kristoffer Moldekleiv from ETN offered practical, relatable advice on overcoming nervousness and making networking feel less awkward. Preparing a few conversation openers in advance, can go a long way. For Kristoffer, the most important skill is listening – something often overlooked in fast-paced networking settings.

He also pointed out that it’s perfectly normal not to click with everyone and the importance of recognizing when that happens - and having a polite way to move on.

After the talks, it was time to put theory into practice. Over pizza and drinks, participants were guided through some easy networking exercises designed to break the ice and encourage real conversations.

Everyone who had registered was automatically entered into a prize draw for a gift worth NOK 1000 – a fun and fitting end to a successful evening.

Networking doesn’t have to be stiff or uncomfortable.

With the right tools, a bit of courage, and some good company, it can actually be… fun!
