On December 12, 2024, Energy Transition Norway and NORCE convened key stakeholders—including Equinor, Shell, Fortescue, Dalane Energi, Maritime CleanTech, HydePoint, Arda Energy, Gasnor AS, Vestland County Municipality, the University of Stavanger, and the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences—for the HyCoast project kick-off at Risavika Technology Park.

The project's goal is to secure EU funding to establish a hydrogen valley on Norway's west coast. This integrated initiative aims to connect hydrogen activities, promote commercial value chains, and develop technology and safety standards.

What is a Hydrogen Valley?

Hydrogen valleys are geographically defined hydrogen ecosystems encompassing mobility, industry, and energy systems. They serve as demonstration projects that showcase hydrogen's versatility, increase demand, integrate hydrogen into the energy system, and enhance public understanding of hydrogen technologies.

The HyCoast project aims to:

- Consolidate hydrogen activities on the west coast

- Ensure standardization and interoperability

- Establish commercial hydrogen value chains

- Enhance hydrogen-related competencies

- Further develop technology and safety standards

As part of a broader European effort focusing on hydrogen valleys, HyCoast seeks to share experiences to strengthen hydrogen's role locally, nationally, and internationally.

This initiative could be pivotal in positioning Western Norway as a leading player in the green transition.
